Challenge 9 - First (and only) Strike

I realize this is really, really, REALLY late, but here goes nothing.

This game puts William "BJ" Blazkowitz from Wolfenstein into Duck Hunt. Yes, you heard me. Chain guns in Duck Hunt. Kill ducks to earn points. You can shoot the dog if you want to, but only if you want to piss of Mecha Hitler.

Okay I think that about covers it.

  1. well, mecha-hitler aside, the mechanics of a chain gun aren't too far off from the original duck hunt shooting mechanics.

Also, you'd, yeah, get through ducks very quickly.
I've played a flash game that's basically much like you describe-- duck hunt with a minigun... and they throw a an impressive storm of ducks at you to compensate for the fact that you mow down 12 per second.

I was totally just thinking about this challenge earlier this morning when I went to check on if anyone had posted yet (you hadn't by that point) and ironically thought of a duck hunt game fusion game as well... combining Duck Hunt with Asteroids.

Unfortunately it doesn't quite map properly to this challenge, as it wasn't just replacing a single character, but kind of cramming most of the game into Asteroids into Duck Hunt (leaving the original Duck Hunt characters intact) and also changing the character roles around (the asteroids ship having to shoot the ducks, and the duck hunter having to shoot the asteroids!)

I think in general Duck Hunt is a problematic game to choose for this challenge as it's protagonist character isn't actually present in the game... it's the player, on the other side of the screen. Makes him difficult to replace.
You play with that metaphor with your submission above, so... kudos for that..

But I still feel that this was rather phoned in.
Granted, I think you meant it mostly as a joke, but eh.

(Oooh, total random aside, but thinking about it, Space invaders could possibly work very interestingly with Duck Hunt... you play the space invaders tank, but otherwise the Duck Hunt game would be completely unaltered...)

  2. Another fun Duck Hunt alternative:

    Super Mario Duck Hunt--

you're Mario, with all his normal mechanics:
Same old running and jumping, etc, with the ability to kill things only by jumping on their heads.

Well, put him in the Duck Hunt world, with it's rules-- there's limited rounds where ducks come out, fly around for a short period of time and then fly away, with the player having to kill as many ducks as possible.

The Duck Hunt world does not scroll, so Mario is limited to one screen, and, being Mario, must kill the ducks by jumping on top of them.
To do so, though, he'll need to get up high in the sky by jumping onto the bush and then tree found in the scene, attempting to do this and land on the ducks before they're gone -- a task that will likely involve jumping from duck to duck, chain style as everyone loves to do in Mario.

Granted, this isn't a very deep game and after a couple of rounds it'd get pretty boring.

But hey, fits the challenge pretty decently.
